After a year of applying, medical screening, interviews, and a whole lot of waiting, we are finally in Guatemala. There is a group of 32 trainees in the Municipal Development and Sustainable Agriculture programs.
Yesterday, we arrived in Guatemala around 1:30 PM and went straight to our training site in Santa Lucia. We did some initial medical stuff then went to meet our host families. My host family is awesome and I´m a little bummed that we won´t be staying with them for all of training.
After dinner, my host mother took me to an engagement party. It was so much fun. We played a bunch of silly games including: Papa Caliente, one where the future groom had to feel our hands blindfolded and pick out his future wife´s hands from the group, and one that seemed a bit like Love Connection. It was entertaining and the people were so nice.
Today, we had our language interviews and some introductory medical information sessions. We also got a few shots and had a delicious lunch of chicken, mashed potatoes (!!!!), tortillas, vegetables, and salad. It was so good.
Overall, I´m still pinching myself that I´m in Guatemala, but it is amazing and beautiful and overwhelming.
