I’ve gotten a lot of responses when I tell people I’m going to Guatemala. Some people high five me and say it’s the coolest thing they have ever heard. They tell me how jealous they are and that they wish they could leave their boring 9 to 5 jobs and do something new and adventurous. Others just stare at me blankly and and ask, “Why?” To which, I respond, “Because it’s awesome!”
But, my favorite response was, “You should shave your head.” One of my coworkers said that to me today. She started by saying I should cut my hair really, really short, then just said I should shave my head. I laughed at her and she just said, “Ok, you wait and see. You’ll wish you listened to me in August.” I told her she was probably right….but I’m still not shaving my head.
Since I accepted my invitation, I’ve sent for the no-fee passport, completed my aspiration statement and updated resume, requested forms for loan deferment, and given my notice at work. More importantly, I’ve started to make plans to see as many people as I can before I leave. I’ve seen it posted on other blogs but it is totally true that after months (and months and months) of waiting for any movement, things are suddenly coming at lightning speed. No complaints here!

I say don’t shave your head, only because your hair will protect you from the zancudos – which was one of my first new words in Honduras. It means mosquitos.
